Back to Courses for Specialist Staff

One of the toughest but most rewarding roles in the professional body sector can be that of lay member. It can be a lonely and at times an extremely challenging task - requiring first class diplomatic skills tempered by a fearless ability to ask the difficult questions of well seasoned and dedicated professional board members who know their stuff.

This half day course sets out to support you in your role by:

  •  Formalising what makes a good lay member

  • Examining skills audit research of the average lay member

  • Looking at different lay member roles and responsibilities

  • Identifying how lay board members fit within a modern professional body

  • Analysing lay member value

Not sure if your organisation is a member? View a list of our members online.

Each PARN member organisation gets one free place at an event or training course per year. Contact our Office Administrator, Emma How, to find out if you have one available.

The course will set out to challenge and to reinforce things you thought and perhaps have yet to discover about being an effective lay member. You will learn, for example, where lay members sit in terms of governance and organisational structure. You will also find out about the different ways lay members are used (not simply on the board but as key members of disciplinary and professional standards panels, for example). But most importantly of all you will get to share experiences and practice with fellow lay members.

You will take part in a number of interactive and workshop based sessions.  There will be video case studies, the opportunity to learn from presentations and to undertake some individual reflection.

You will receive ongoing support and guidance together with a training folder with supplementary information and a copy of our new publication on lay membership.
