IPEM is a Registered Charity promoting the advancement of physics and engineering applied to medicine and biology, and advancing public education in the field.  It is also a Company Limited by Guarantee (No. 3080332), and all Trustees are also Directors of the Company. The Institute has approximately 4,600 members who work to improve healthcare in hospitals, other healthcare organisations and related academic and commercial areas. It communicates specialist knowledge through scientific publishing activities and scientific meetings, funds small-scale research and innovation projects, and has a growing public outreach programme. IPEM awards professional registrations under licence from both the Science Council and the Engineering Council. IPEM also plays a significant role in international medical engineering and physics.
