Commissioners and employers have been urged to adopt a series of key principles designed to future-proof doctors’ training.
Pre and post-qualification training and development of doctors, published today by the British Medical Association (BMA), follows on from the recommendations set out in the Shape of Training review.
Proposals include ensuring training better reflects the needs of patients, allowing for continuous learning, and improving flexibility to accommodate the needs of doctors.
BMA representative body chair Ian Wilson, who led the association's work examining training, said that training and education needed to adapt to meet the new and growing challenges facing the health sector: ‘Over the past two decades, medical education and training has been characterised by a continuous cycle of renew and review. However, the change that has followed all too often lacks fundamental details such as resource, requirement or impact.
‘Our document seeks to avoid past mistakes and set some core principles that would underpin the purpose of training, making training and development integral to services and service planning, resourced and quality based.’
The six key principles set out in the document were formulated following consultation with BMA members, as well as being informed by existing policy, and include that education, training and development are:
- Responsive to the population’s health requirements
- Rooted in an ethos of professional excellence
- An inspiring process of continuous life-long learning
- Fair and inclusive
- Supportive and flexible for learners and trainees
- Designed to enable employers and infrastructure to provide value and support
