JOB DESCRIPTION
About the role
As Executive Director, you will be responsible for the overall management, leadership and development of the organisation and be accountable to the Board of Trustees. The role is home-based and is supported by a friendly staff team of four other part-time individuals, also home-based.
Principal accountabilities
- Lead the organisation, working closely with the Board of Trustees to deliver the strategic aims.
- Act as ambassador for the organisation, representing it at meetings, conferences and events.
- Set and manage the budget and resources of the organisation with the support of the Board of Trustees and the guidance of the Honorary Treasurer.
- Ensure the organisation operates in line with its charitable objectives.
- Oversee a diverse and inclusive programme of events, including the Annual Conference, supported by the Board of Trustees, volunteers and staff.
- Ensure a vibrant programme of activity across the network of groups that enhances UKELA’s reputation and member experience.
- Foster positive and productive relationships with key stakeholders, like-minded organisations and fellow membership associations in the UK and internationally.
- Advise the Board of Trustees on statutory governance and activities, including the AGM and elections for new trustees.
- Pursue suitable funding opportunities where appropriate.
- Ensure that the organisation is presented externally in the best possible way via publications, the website, social media and press releases.
Person profile
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Experience and/or an interest in environmental law.
- Understanding of and commitment to UKELA’s strategic aims and goals, including the importance of equality and diversity.
- Proven leadership and management ability in strategic planning, service delivery and organisational development.
- Ability to work on own initiative and to prioritise work flexibly.
- Experience of and ability to prepare and to manage a budget.
- Ability to earn and maintain the trust of a wide range of people.
- Ability to communicate effectively and to present information in a clear and accessible way.
- Good inter-personal skills and experience of managing a team.
- Understanding of the voluntary and charity sector, including governance issues.
- Proven track record in fundraising and marketing activities.
What we offer
- From (at least) 2.5 days per week (7.5 hours per day) flexible.
- Competitive salary for a suitably experienced candidate.

- Annual leave: statutory annual leave (exact number of days pro-rata dependent on days worked), plus Bank Holidays.
- Home-based role, with IT and communications equipment provided and/or contribution paid towards costs, as appropriate to candidate’s circumstances.
