“The general impression one gets from the media is that trust in the professions is under challenge with a continual stream of reports of unethical or incompetent professional behaviour, especially heightened during the credit crunch. This has led to increasing calls for transparency and accountability in the professions.” Andy Friedman, PARN Director
PARN recognises that professional bodies are increasingly pursuing initiatives to raise standards and increase public trust, whether through CPD, ethics or fair access. In 2010, PARN will call attention to these initiatives, and highlight the good work being done in the sector.

In 2010, PARN will engage in a range of activities within the context of “The Professions Fight Back”
One significant way we will take action is through TotalProfessions.com, launching in spring 2010.
Our upcoming research project, Moving to Compulsory CPD, will investigate a more specific aspect of raising standards.
Our work on social networking will encourage professional bodies to present an up-to-date ‘face’ to their members and the general public.
‘The Professions Fight Back’ will also build on much of PARN’s recent work
PARN’s report on professional standards for the FSA gives a broad sweep of what is being done with regards to the ‘three pillars’ of professional standards: Entry Standards, Complaints and Discipline, CPD and Positive Supports for Ethical Behaviour.
PARN’s November event, The Future of the Professions, was an essential step in realising the importance of this concept.
PARN’s research on inclusion, and our discussions through our Diversity SIG with Equally Professional, has given us a better understanding of the role professional bodies’ play in creating a ‘fair’ society.
What is the value of professional bodies? A recent member enquiry looks at professional bodies' view of their value to their members, society, the economy and the profession.
…So join us in 2010 in supporting the work of professional bodies, and reaffirming the importance of the professions!
