Context
Social networking tools and Web 2.0 are this year's talking points. Their effect has been seen in private companies, charity fundraising, community decision-making and political mobilisation. Their use has altered the strategy of organisations and changed the shape of projects to include greater and wider participation. However, the tools alone do not make things happen, we need to understand the practices that lead to positive change and understand the challenges of implementing such systems for professional bodies. These challenges are both the technology itself and how it is used and what it used for.
Professional bodies are facing communication and membership engagement challenges such as increasing the diversity of their membership; many are finding it difficult to engage with younger members (especially student members and those recently qualified). In order to retain member engagement, some professional bodies are implementing technologies including social networking. This is not however, without its problems. It can alienate the older generation who are not familiar with such technology, and the abuse of social networking sites can lead to a negative perception of the professional body by other organisations.
PARN’s ‘CPD & the Internet’ project aims to investigate the role of internet technologies in CPD today, in order to help associations to decide on future investment in, and development of, online CPD facilities. The research is investigating how, and for what reasons, online facilities are being used in the area of CPD, the impact that this has on member participation and access, costs and benefits, barriers to success and the latest developments in online technology.
