The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is an international membership organisation that exists to promote and advance civil engineering around the world.
About us
ICE was founded in 1818 by a small group of idealistic young engineers and was granted a royal charter in 1828. ICE ensures that the professional high standards needed to become a civil engineer are met by all its members. ICE is a centre for the exchange of specialist knowledge and a provider of resources to encourage innovation and excellence in the profession.
International representation
With over 84,000 members in the UK and overseas, ICE supports its members and responds to their individual needs through a network of international country representatives and UK regional support teams.
Learning, knowledge and standards
ICE works with the businesses that employ civil engineers and the schools and universities that educate them. This helps to encourage more young people to consider entering the profession and to ensure that their education and training are of the highest possible standards.
ICE also encourages knowledge to be shared throughout the industry and beyond, and helps to ensure that civil engineering is innovative, safe and successful. The institution is respected for its opinions because it has the professional experience to support them.
Public representation
Engaging with government and the media is an important part of the Institution’s work. ICE is recognised as an independent expert to all major UK political parties and government departments on infrastructure issues, and engages at national, devolved and regional levels.
ICE also generates public awareness of the importance of infrastructure and the value of civil engineers, by providing expert comment and information to national, regional and trade media.
Promoting sustainable development
ICE encourages development that meets the needs of today without harming those of tomorrow. The Institution expects all its members to understand and promote sustainable development, and the need to deliver projects that take into account environmental, social and economic factors.
Civil engineers at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skill and professional expertise.
