Growth in the professions
Professional occupations have increased substantially in the last two decades. Growth has taken place not only in the traditional professions, but also in new professions that have emerged as changes in the nature of commerce, the values of society and advances in technology demand new skills and new specialisms.
Professional bodies sector
New professional bodies are being created to cater for the needs of these new specialists. Currently there are approximately 400 professional associations in the UK with over 1000 members. Together they represent 6 million professionals.
Need for research & networking
Following two conferences for professional associations organised by the University of Bristol, Andy saw that there was very little research being carried out on this sector.
There was also relatively little co-ordination between professional associations in different sectors on areas of common concern.
To meet these needs, the Professional Associations Research Network (PARN) was set up in June 1998 by Andy Friedman from the Management Research Centre at the University of Bristol.
