In February 2011, PARN began researching how professional bodies can contribute to and
support the uptake of Higher Apprenticeships in the professions for the National Apprenticeship Service.
The research findings are summarised in a comprehensive report which is available for free below.
About the research
It is widely acknowledged that providing opportunities for people from all backgrounds to gain high quality skills is an important target for maintaining the strength and competitiveness of the UK economy in the 21st century.
In the UK an important agenda for the professions is to widen participation while maintaining high standards. At the same time, it is important that gaining high quality skills allows individuals the opportunity to progress into the professions.
PARN and the National Apprenticeships Service have been collaborating on a short research programme aimed at stimulating the supply and support of Higher Apprenticeships through engagement with professional bodies in the UK. Higher Apprenticeships represent an opportunity to widen access to professional careers through rigorous work-based training, but engagement between employers, professional bodies and learning providers is vital.
The aim of this research is to assess market demand for Apprenticeships in the professions through a survey of professional bodies and to explore the attitudes and opinions of professional bodies and their senior staff towards Apprenticeships, as well as to map the level of qualifications for professional memberships in various professional sectors.
