Governance of Professional Bodies

Want to know how the pressures of corporate governance in the private sector compare to those in professional bodies?

Learn about PARN’s model of governance and what the advantages and disadvantages of different structures and processes are. Also learn how professional bodies with revised governance structures have fared.

 

Course Delivery & Materials

The day will combine a mix of interactive sessions, video case studies, presentations and time for individual reflection. Start time is 9:30am and end time 5:00pm with tea, coffee and lunch provided.

Course is delivered by Prof Andy Friedman, CEO of PARN and Sarah Ward, our HR & Business Consultant.

These will be supplemented by new material based on research carried out in 2011. This and other supplementary information, including case studies, will be provided in a training folder to support your learning on this topic, along with copies of course slides, case studies and good practice guidelines.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an overall perspective on the governance of professional bodies including international comparisons
  • Consider the advantages and disadvantages of your own governance structure and processes
  • Consider the advantages and disadvantages of moving from traditional representative Councils to ‘private sector’ Executive Boards
  • Learn of the PARN cupped hands model
  • Brush up on the legal responsibilities of directors
  • Consider the competencies and competence required of members of the governing body
  • Learn how to provide and maintain good/best practice for your governing body considering induction, individual and group evaluation as well as particularly important support structures such as nomination committees and principles of good governance processes
  • Consider the processes of implementing change in governance and the pitfalls to avoid
  • Appreciate future directions in professional body governance
  • Discuss governance issues with others facing similar challenges
