Governance and Volunteers: New directions in roles and responsibilities

Governance and Volunteers: New directions in roles and responsibilities

4 March 2009
Woburn House, London

As membership organisations, professional bodies traditionally have been led and governed by volunteers. However, as the functions of professional bodies become more business-like and strategic so the role of volunteers becomes more complex. What is the future role of the volunteer in professional bodies? How do professional bodies best employ their volunteers’ skills and knowledge in the workplace?

This conference aims to provide practical insights into, and to stimulate debate and learning around, how professional bodies can best make use of volunteer effort. If your professional body wants to get as much as it can from its volunteers, then this event is for you!

The conference will cover a number of pertinent and applicable themes including:

  • Governance versus management roles
  • Organisational roles (particularly in smaller bodies)
  • Using volunteers as ‘experts’
  • Volunteer use for specific projects or task forces

Governance and Volunteers will examine the advantages and disadvantages of employing volunteers in particular roles, and the issues in relations between volunteers and staff. We will look closely at how to best distribute the volunteer’s efforts between governance, support for operational activities and management, and the use of their expertise for public facing activities. The event will also investigate appropriate proportions of staff in relation to volunteers and how this is affected by the size and situation of an organisation.

You should attend if:

  • You are thinking of reviewing the role volunteers play in your organisation
  • You are thinking of reviewing your governing body or committee structure
  • You would like to see how other organisations manage the relationship between governance and volunteers
  • You would like to learn from other associations’ and organisations’ experiences in this area
  • You are a volunteer or staff member who would like to experience different approaches and ideas of what works and what can be done
