Socio-economic barriers to access to the professions
In the recent White Paper on social mobility (New Opportunities – Fair Chances for the Future, Cabinet Office, January 2009) the government discussed a raft of measures aimed at increasing social mobility, including ‘increasing the talent pool for every profession’. The Equally Professional Network has participated in three Gateways projects, focussing on barriers to ethnic minorities and the production of toolkits on diversity for professional bodies and fairer recruitment into the professions. In addition there have been sector-specific reviews such as the Neuberger Review into access to the legal profession.
Building on this previous work and the PARN consultation meetings to gather evidence and recommendations for the Panel on Fair Access, this FREE Equality and Diversity SIG (special interest group) event will look at the Panel recommendations and what professional bodies can do to address these issues.
Event programme:
* Introduction from the Chair of Equally Professional Network
* Update on the Panel on Fair Access to the Professions - David Knott, Secretariat to the Panel
* Discussion Forum and Plenary - to address the key messages from the Panel
