Socioeconomic Barriers into The Professions: A Literature Review
|
This literature review looked at low socioeconomic groups and aimed to identify links between social demographics and immobility.
We found although there is a clear link between social status, the labour market, social mobility and occupational levels; there is remarkably little information available that deals with low socioeconomic status and access to the professions.

About the research
PARN was commissioned by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to identify socioeconomic barriers (not including education) that prevent access to the professions, as well as identify gaps where future research might be needed.
‘The research report is highly valued to us and we submitted it to the Cabinet Office.’
- EHRC
‘Our conclusion is that previous research has focussed primarily on class, structural and cultural issues leaving other socioeconomic groups relatively under researched. This is especially prevalent in relation to the barriers these groups face in securing jobs in the professions.’
